On 22nd of October Apple was back with new products. After iPhone launch almost a month ago it was the time for new iPads. Latest Mac book pros and Maverick OS were also launched at this event. This was the last Apple launch of the year and going by the past trends next should occur during September 2014 with iPhone 6.
The star of this launch was the new iPad Air. It has the same high resolution retina display of previous version but its exterior is influenced from iPad mini. The width of its sides has been educed and now it looks kind of large iPad Mini. This has made it almost 20% lighter than last iPad. It also inherits the latest 64 bit A7 GPU and M7 co-processor from the iPhone 5S. Apple claims that A7 is twice as fast as previous generation iPad. Apple has also doubled the speed of Wi-Fi to 300 Mbps but in a country where internet speeds are still measured in Kbps it will hardly make any difference. Apple has added one more microphone on the iPad which I believe is a nice addition because Siri struggled to recognize Indian accent on iPad whereas on iPhone (which has multiple microphones) it works beautifully. The front camera is also tweaked for better low light experience.
On the application front it runs iOS 7 out of the box and has an access to all iLife (iPhoto and iMovie) and iWork (Pages, Numbers and Keynote) apps free of cost! Earlier iOS users would still have to pay around 2000 INR for these apps.
Other launch of this event, the iPad mini with retina display is a shrunken iPad Air. Last yearmini had different dimensions, screen resolution and processor from its larger sibling but this year everything is the same. Apart from the screen size which is 1.8 inches smaller, nothing is different. So if you now want a smaller iPad you won't have to sacrifice the features. I believe this step would dramatically reduce the sale of iPad Air which has portability issues.
2 year old iPad 2 would still be available. Whereas iPad Air will maintain the price point of previous iPad with retina display the new iPad mini will cost 70$ more from the previous generation mini.
Apple has done a commendable job with new iPads though non-availability on fingerprint sensor(included with iPhone 5S) would disappoint some users.
